How can I learn more about the safety and toxicity of different hair colorants on the market?
Before using any hair color, we suggest you do your own research. There are many online resources including:
- Adverse Effects of Hair Coloring (Wikipedia)
- Hair Dye Linked to Blood Cancer – Long-Term Use of Dark, Permanent Dye May Raise Lymphoma Risk (WebMD)
What is the difference between permanent, semi-permanent and demi-permanent hair colorants?
The basic difference is durability i.e. resistance of the dye to multiple shampooing and environmental conditions. Semi-permanent colorants last typically for few days and up to 5 shampoos. Demi-permanent colorants last anywhere from 10 to 15 days and up to 15 shampoos. Permanent colorants should last at least three weeks and up to 20 shampoos. It is a common mistake to assume that a permanent dye must be an oxidative dye. An oxidative dye must have developer that contains Hydrogen Peroxide. However non-oxidative dyes (i.e. dyes without a developer) that are typically called semi-permanent can also impart a permanent color.
Do you have unscented version of Palette by Nature™ hair color?

What is PPD?
p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) β an organic compound with the formula C6H4(NH2)2. This derivative of aniline, an aromatic amine, is a colorless solid when pure, but typically samples are partially oxidized and appear yellowish. It mainly used as a component of engineering polymers and composites. Its use is controversial because of its high toxicity and may cause allergic reactions, which makes it a controversial chemical to be included in hair dyes.
This compound is used in almost every hair dye on the market, regardless of brand. The darker the color, usually, the higher the concentrations. Some of the so-called "natural" and "herbal" hair colours, while ammonia-free, contain PPD. Some products sold as henna also contain PPD added, particularly "black henna." Using body art-quality (BAQ) pure henna, or indigo, is the only way to avoid PPD in hair dye. PPD is added to henna to create so called "Black Henna." In many cases, PPD causes allergic reaction, and can cause scarring in some people. PPD should never be applied directly to the skin in its pure form or mixed with anything else.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that in rats and mice chronically exposed to PPD in their diet, it simply depressed body weights, but there were no other clinical signs of toxicity, as were observed in several studies. Between 1992 and 2005, thirty-one articles were published a causal association between PPD and cancer. Associations between personal hair dye use and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, acute leukemia, and bladder cancer were observed in at least one well-designed study with detailed exposure assessment, but were not consistently observed across studies. However, the EPA has not classified PPD as a carcinogen. Therefore, no warnings of toxicity have been printed on boxes of hair dye.
The CDC lists PPD as being a contact allergen. Exposure routes are through inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and skin and/or eye contact; symptoms of exposure include throat irritation (pharynx and larynx), bronchial asthma, and sensitization dermatitis. Sensitization is a lifelong issue, which may lead to active sensitization to products including, but not limited to black clothing, various inks, hair dye, dyed fur, dyed leather, and certain photographic products.
It was voted Allergen of the Year in 2006 by the American Contact Dermatitis Society. (Source: Wikipedia.org)
Palette by Nature™ line of products is completely PPD-free.
Why can Ammonia be bad for my hair?
In addition to having a strong, unpleasant odor, Ammonia or Ammonium Hydroxide can generally irritate your skin during acute exposure. Ammonia is used with oxidative (permanent) dyes to open up hair cuticle and to allow p-Phenylenediamine-based dye to penetrate into the hair shaft. Significant hair damage can occur at high enough concentration. Palette by Nature™ line of products is completely Ammonia-free.
What are parabens?
Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Parabens are effective preservatives in many types of formulas. These compounds, and their salts, are used primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, personal lubricants, topical/parenteral pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution and toothpaste. They are also used as food additives.
Several peer-reviewed studies have reported results that indirectly support a correlation between the presence of parabens and the occurrence of breast cancer. High levels of parabens have been detected in breast tumors, with one UK-based study finding high concentrations of parabens in eighteen out of twenty samples of breast tumors. These findings, along with the demonstrated ability of parabens to mimic estrogen, a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancers, have led some scientists to conclude that the presence of parabens does correlate with the occurrence of breast cancer. However, no direct evidence of a causal link between parabens and cancer has yet to be been shown. (Source: Wikipedia.org) Palette by Nature™ line of products is completely paraben-free.
Do your products contain peroxide?
No, all Palette by Nature™ products are peroxide free.
What is SLS?
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc.). SLS is inexpensive and very effective foaming agent. However, it is a known skin irritant and sensitizer. (Source: Wikipedia.org)
Palette by Nature™ line of products is completely SLS-free.
Is Palette by Nature™ compatible with other hair coloring treatments?
Yes. Palette by Nature is compatible with most permanent or semi-permanent hair colorants .It can be applied on previously lifted, permed, straitened or bleached hair. It is an excellent choice to be applied on foils.
I am currently using Henna. Can I switch to Palette by Nature™ hair color?
